LibreOffice Malayalam spellchecker using mlmorph

A few months back, I wrote about the spellchecker based on Malayalam morphology analyser. I was also trying to intergrate that spellchecker with LibreOffice. It is not yet ready for any serious usage, but if you are curious and would like to help me in its further development, please read on.

The libreoffice spellchecker for Malayalam is available at You need to get the code using git checkout or download the master version as zip file

You need LibreOffice 4.1 or later. Latest version is recommended. In the source code directory, run make install to install the extension.

Open libreoffice writer, add some Malayalam text. Make sure to select the language as Malayalam by choosing it from the menu or bottom status bar. You should see the spelling check in action… if everything goes as expected 😉

How can you help?

Theoretically, the extension should work in non-Linux platforms as well. But I have not tested it. The extension need python3 and python-hfst for the operating system. But python-hfst is not available for Windows 64 bit python installation. If you test and get the extension working, please add documentation and if anything missing to make the installation more easy, let me know.

As the mlmorph project get wider support for Malayalam vocabulary, the quality of spellchecker improves automatically.

  1. Cool work indeed. Just a doubt, Is there a web version of this text checking, like the one with google input tools and all? Nice work. How can someone with a beginners knowledge in the language related technologies contribute to your works?

    1. Web version of the spellchecker is at Note that these are all in initial phases of development.
About contributing, it depends in which particular area you are interested. In general, familiarize with a technology, play with it, identify area to improve, work on it are the steps. The source code is open and the there are good documentation.

  2. We tried to install Malayalam spell checker in Libre Office under Ubuntu 16.04. From your site we downloaded the master zip file. All prerequisites like python 3.6 , libre ver. 5 etc.were installed.

Bu while trying to “make” distribution packages, it aborts with the following error:

    include/python3.6m -c regex_3/_regex.c -o build/temp.linux-i686-3.6/regex_3/_regex.o
regex_3/_regex.c:48:20: fatal error: Python.h: No such file or directory
    compilation terminated.
error: command ‘i686-linux-gnu-gcc’ failed with exit status 1

We even tried to install regex and it was successfully updated:

Requirement already satisfied: regex in /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages (2016.1.10)

At the same time the spell checker was successfully installed in gedit.

How to go about? Is it possible to share the distribution package?
