There’s been a recent surge in news reports about schools, including those in Kerala, incorporating AI into classrooms. For example this news titled “Kerala School Introduces IRIS: India’s First AI Teacher Robot” Today, I learned about a teacher training program organized by the Kerala Education Department. The program focuses on training teachers before students on AI tools. While I generally support teacher training on new technologies that can potentially improve teaching or save time, I’m curious about the specific problems AI is expected to solve. For instance, the news report mentions AI tools evaluating answer sheets, generating exam questions, and creating unit tests. Perhaps a better question is should these tasks be automated? If teachers struggle with these tasks and seek to rely on AI, there might be underlying pedagogical issues, not technological ones. ...

On February 15, I attended the Professional student summit organized by higher education department of Kerala. The summit aims to provide a venue to interact with professionals with the students. Around 2000 students from 2nd to 4th semesters from different colleges of law, engineering, medicine, agriculture, fisheries, veterinary and management in Kerala attended the summit. The Chief Minister and Minister for Higher Education also attended the Summit. This is the second edition of the event.  കേരള സാങ്കേതിക സര്‍വ്വകലാശാലയുടെ ഒന്നും മൂന്നും സെമസ്റ്ററുകളിലെ പരീക്ഷകള്‍ ഒരുപാട് കോലാഹലങ്ങള്‍ക്കു ശേഷം തുടങ്ങിക്കഴിഞ്ഞു. മൂല്യനിര്‍ണ്ണയശാലകളും സജീവമായിരിക്കുന്നു. ചോദ്യപ്പേപ്പറുകളും അവയുടെ നിലവാരവും മൂല്യനിര്‍ണ്ണയരീതിയും ഒക്കെയാണ് ഞങ്ങള്‍ അദ്ധ്യാപകര്‍ക്കിടയിലിപ്പോള്‍ ചൂടുള്ള ചര്‍ച്ച. ‘പോര്‍ഷന്‍ തീര്‍ത്താല്‍’ തീരുന്ന പണിയേ തനിക്കുളുവെന്നു കരുതിയിരുന്നവരായിരുന്നു മിക്കവരും. “ഒക്കെ ഞാന്‍ പഠിപ്പിച്ചതാ, അവര് പഠിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ ജയിച്ചേനെ” അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ “നമ്മളെയൊക്കെ ക്ലാസ്സില്‍ പഠിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടാണോ, കാര്യങ്ങളൊക്കെ തനിയേ കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചു പഠിക്കാനുള്ള മടികൊണ്ടാ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ കുട്ടികളൊക്കെ പരീക്ഷയില്‍ തോല്‍ക്കുന്നേ” എന്നുമൊക്കെയുള്ള മാസ്സ് ഡയലോഗടിയ്ക്കാന്‍ അദ്ധ്യാപകർക്കൊന്നും പണ്ടത്തെയെന്നപോലെ ഇപ്പോഴും ഒരു മടിയുമില്ല. വ്യക്തിപരമായ നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങള്‍ നിന്നുള്ള സാമാന്യവല്‍ക്കരണത്തില്‍ തെറ്റുകളുണ്ടന്നു തോന്നിയാല്‍ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിക്കുക, തിരുത്താം 🙂 തനിയ്ക്ക് ആഴത്തില്‍ ബോധ്യമുള്ള ഒരു കാര്യം മാത്രമേ മറ്റൊരാള്‍ക്കു ബോധിയ്ക്കും വിധം പറഞ്ഞു കൊടുക്കാന്‍ ആര്‍ക്കായാലും പറ്റൂ. അവര്‍ക്കേ ക്ലാസ്സ്മുറിയില്‍ പഠിതാവില്‍ നിന്നും തിരിച്ചു ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടാകുമ്പോള്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ ആഴത്തിലേയ്ക്കിറങ്ങി പാഠഭാഗം ഇനിയും ആസ്വാദ്യകരമാക്കുവാന്‍ സാധിക്കൂ, ചുറ്റുമുള്ളലോകത്തെ അതിലേയ്ക്ക് ബന്ധിപ്പിയ്ക്കുവാനാകൂ. അങ്ങനെയൊരു ക്ലാസ്സിലിരുന്ന വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിക്കേ അതുനുമപ്പുറമെന്തുണ്ടെന്ന് ക്ലാസ്സിനു പുറത്തന്വേഷിക്കുവാന്‍ സാധിക്കൂ. അപ്പൊഴേ പഠിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടു തന്റെ പരിസരത്തെ എങ്ങനെ മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്താമെന്ന് അദ്ധ്യാപകര്‍ക്കും സഹപാഠികള്‍ക്കുമൊപ്പം ചര്‍ച്ച ചെയ്യാനും പ്രാവര്‍ത്തികമാക്കാനും ഉള്ള ശ്രമങ്ങളൊകെ ഉണ്ടാകൂ. ഇതൊക്കെ സാധിച്ചില്ലെങ്കില്‍ ഒരു സാങ്കേതിക കലാലയം കൊണ്ട് എന്താണ് പ്രയോജനം? ...

The IEEE student branch of College of Engineering, Chengannur is doing a commendable initiative conducting a week long student quality improvement programme. I was invited to give an introductory workshop on version control systems as part of ISQIP 2016. It was a good experience to be with a group of enthusiastic youngsters.
