Just to clarify, since I see some confusion on this – a language is not the same as a script. So when someone says Sanskrit spelling, it would help to clarify as Sanskrit spelling in Nagari script. The script is just used to express the language in written form, and you can well express Hindi in Latin / Roman script (what you call ‘English’).

OK – what I really wanted to ask was – any chance of a PHP implementation?

santhosh, if malayalam is written in english – popularly referred to manglish – is soundex reliable ? have you tried this method?

the equivalent of संतोष in Malayalam should be സംതോഷ്, But it is the wrong spelling. The correct spelling is സന്തോഷ്.

This can be used for CLIR. Search/Retrieval system for many e governance applications can be modeled on this and will be very useful.

How different is the soundex for संतोष from the one for संतौष? Incidentally the Sanskrit spelling for the word is संतोष – not sure how it’s spelled in Malayalam.
